Tattoos and Waxing

Can Your Tattoos Benefit From Waxing?

Can I wax over tattoos? Will waxing make my tattoo duller or brighter? How long should I wait before waxing over a tattoo? Is waxing bad for tattoos? Can I wax before getting a tattoo? How soon after getting a tattoo can I wax?

I keep getting all those questions pretty often, so let's see if waxing is safe for tattoos.

The short answer is that you can definitely safely wax over ink without worrying about damaging it! In fact, waxing can make your tattoos look fresher and more vibrant, but remember that timing is the key!

Pre-Tattoo Waxing

As the skin is the canvas, tattoo artists usually shave the area before a tattoo to make it easier to work. But hair begins to grow back within a day or two, causing discomfort.

Waxing one week before you get inked, will not only give your tattoo artist a great canvas to work on, but will also keep your skin hair-free for several weeks, allowing it to heal without stumble and discomfort.

Post-Tattoo Waxing

However, you must never wax over a new tattoo that is still healing. A new tattoo can take anything from 4-6 weeks to fully heal - waxing at this stage would be like waxing over an open wound.

Wax is applied solely to the top layer of your skin, aka the epidermis, so it doesn’t touch or affect your tattoo ink that is injected into your dermis, the layer below the epidermis. After your skin is healed it is completely safe to wax over it! As already said before, waxing can make your tattoos look fresher and more vibrant!

Rejuvenate your Tattoo

Yes, you got that right! Waxing can make your tattoo brighter and more vibrant! The reason for that is that waxing acts as an exfoliant. Not only does it removes your unwanted hair, but it eliminates all those dead skin cells on your skin's surface. A total win-win, as with waxing you get a hair-free renewed, healthier skin, and a more radiant, fresher tattoo.
